Reformation Silver (2018, digital display)

The eighteenth century silver censer is presented with an array of sources related to the object: recipes for incense, letters discussing secret Catholic worship, poems by protestants criticising incense use in worship. The censer is currently kept in the V&A Museum. Earlier in its life as an object it was secretly used by a Catholic family in England during the reformation, filled with incense for use during hidden mass.
